In middle school, I began to get bullied by a group of girls. They would laugh at me and say rude comments and make me feel like I was not worth anything. Eventually, the bullying escalated. I ended up in the Natividad emergency room twice. The hospital referred me to a program named CHOICE. In the following days I received a home visit from my case worker, Sorena. She explained what the program was about and its goal of helping me overcome such a challenging part of my life. From that day on, my life changed. Sorena made me feel safer at school. I joined a wrestling team. I made new friends. I got a 4.4 GPA in high school, an internship with Stanford hospital and a full ride to Berkeley!” -Yarely Alvarez Parenting Connection of Monterey County Year Founded: 2014 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 7 paid, 5 volunteers Budget: $685,000 647-3333 parentingconnectionmc.org Big Idea: Maternal mental health is the focus of Parenting Connection of Monterey County, explaining that the health of a community’s caregivers affects us all.
