mcgives.com Monterey County GIVES! 2024 107 Below are a few of key policies of the Big Sur Land Use Plan. It establishes limits to keep this national treasure from chaos and degradation seen in other scenic locations. These policies have preserved Big Sur for over 40 years and kept its unspoiled and rustic nature. However, Big Sur faces increasing pressures from commercial interest, human activities, and climate change. Development along the coastline, infrastructure projects, and overtourism pose challenges to the region’s ecological integrity and Big Sur’s unique character. Keep Big Sur Wild is dedicated to defending the policies and intent of the Big Sur Land Use Plan. Through the fostering of partnerships with local community organizations, advocacy groups, and grassroots networks and working Preserve Big Sur’s Unique Character Donate to our watchdog efforts through MCGives! keepbigsurwild.org To preserve for posterity the incomparable beauty of the Big Sur country, its special cultural and natural resources, its landforms and seascapes and inspirational vistas. To this end, all development must harmonize with and be subordinate to the wild and natural character of the land.” — LUP Section 2.1 – Maintenance of the quality of the natural experience along the Big Sur coast has precedence over development of any permitted uses, whether residential, recreational or commercial.” — LUP Section 3.1 – Resource Management Future land use development on the Big Sur coast should be extremely limited, in keeping with the larger goal of preserving the coast as a scenic natural area. In all cases, new land uses must remain subordinate to the character and grandeur of the Big Sur country. All proposed uses, whether public or private, must meet the same exacting environmental standards and must contribute to the preservation of Big Sur’s scenery.” — LUP Section 5.4.1 – collaboratively with stakeholders and decision makers, we aim to uphold the principles of ensuring equitable access and environmental stewardship outlined in the Big Sur Land Use Plan. Through our collective efforts, we can protect the natural beauty of Big Sur and ensure that it remains a treasured destination for generations to come.
