“We are on Cannery Row because this is where our customers are,” said Kyle Wareham, owner of the bike, kayak and paddleboard rental and tour service. The company operates three locations on Cannery Row. Customers travel from around the globe to visit Cannery Row to take in Monterey’s renowned natural beauty in a meaningful way, the experience often becoming the highlight of their visit, said Wareham. He continued, “We are also here because Cannery Row sits on this National Marine Sanctuary. Our business gives our customers the opportunity to bike near, or kayak on the bay while viewing otters, seals and sea lions.” “When they return from their activity, they are happy and excited to share their adventures and are often inquisitive about the things they experienced.” As the holidays approach, Adventures by the Sea enters a prime season; the winter months on Cannery Row provide the cool, sunny weather that’s perfect for a scenic ride. “Holiday seasons can be some of the best times for viewing wildlife,” Wareham explained. The company continues to innovate and next spring will be offering new experiences for visitors: historic and wildlife walking tours along with sunrise kayak tours. “We don’t get sunsets on Cannery Row,” Wareham said, “but we have some of the most beautiful sunrises on the Central Coast.” “Our business is fortunate to have become a generational destination for families to return to year after year,” Wareham says. adventuresbythesea.com (831) 372-1807 In 1818, pirates landed near McAbee Beach and held Monterey for six days. In 2024, this true story of Hypolite Bouchard’s Cannery Row-based attack gets paired with some imaginative storytelling for an all-new, world-class attraction: Treasure Hunt: The Ride. This dark ride spotlights the creative minds of Ron and John Daniels. The brothers are 27-year veterans of the amusement industry and create jaw-dropping scenic fabrications for attractions all over the world. “Working for ourselves and building our own attraction is the latest chapter in the family dream,” said Ron Daniels. That attraction transports guests to a dank cave deep beneath Cannery Row. Riders are encouraged to help find the riches buried after Bouchard’s raid. “No one knows where the treasure went,” said Daniels. “We’re telling the rest of the story.” Treasure Hunt celebrated its grand opening in July 2023, after 77,000 man-hours of scenic fabrication. The ride gained near-instant recognition, earning prestigious nominations alongside new rides at Disneyland and Universal Studios. “We set out to shock the industry at how good a ride two guys could make,” Daniels said. “People say they feel they are at a major theme park. That’s incredibly satisfying.” While Treasure Hunt turns heads in the amusement industry, Daniels said his favorite accolade comes from witnessing moments of sincere joy that Treasure Hunt inspires,” Daniels said. “When I see little kids wanting to go on the ride over and over and people coming out laughing, I know we did our job right.” treasurehunttheride.com (831) 747-1426 Adventures by the Sea Treasure Hunt: The Ride MEET THE NEIGHBORS

The close of another year of business and the arrival of the holiday season reminds me what makes Cannery Row the top destination on the Central Coast. It’s our unforgettable setting and unique people that give our over 5 million yearly visitors endless ways to have fun and make memories with family and friends. Visitor foot traffic on Cannery Row is impressive and we continue to see strong interest from the drive market and beyond. Today, more than 60 percent of tourist traffic comes from Californians traveling within the state, versus pre-pandemic years years where we saw a steady flow of international visitors. This changing audience gives us a chance to deliver exceptional customer service and interactivity to our neighbors; it’s important to draw people out and get them busy and having fun! We have a saying at The Sardine Factory: “If we make you feel at home, we’ve made a milliondollar mistake. Our job is to make you feel better than home—otherwise why would you go out?” New attractions and stores show the creativity and passion of Cannery Row merchants, as we all work together as ambassadors to give visitors memories they can’t get anywhere else. I’m looking forward to joining you for the 30th annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Friday, November 29. Because of our thriving Cannery Row Business District, we can touch so many lives with philanthropy this holiday season and throughout the year—truly God’s work. And of course, a new year will soon be here and it brings big things for Cannery Row. I am proud to say the American Tin Cannery hotel will be under construction in 2025. The planned hotel will open with 225 beautiful rooms, located within 100 yards of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Happy Holidays from Cannery Row! Ted Balestreri, Chairman and CEO Cannery Row Company “One father said he had never seen his daughter eat with so much enthusiasm and he had to video,” remembered Anni Wang, general manager of Jack’s Bao. “We strive to make our food accessible and delicious for everyone while sticking to authentic recipes. It’s heartwarming to hear customers loving our food.” Jack’s Bao, located at 751 Cannery Row, opened in May 2024, offering a menu of authentic Shanghainese cuisine. The restaurant’s signature bao buns, soup dumplings and wontons are made from scratch with fresh ingredients. As a frequent visitor to Monterey, Wang said a gap in the local foodscape inspired her to open the family-owned Jack’s Bao on Cannery Row. “My family and I always loved visiting Monterey because of the family-oriented activities and beautiful scenery,” she said. “But we noticed a lack of culinary diversity. So when we decided to go into the restaurant business, Monterey was one of the places we wanted to establish as our flagship store.” The menu focuses on recipes sourced from Shanghai, like lion’s head meatball-noodle soup, fried wontons and roasted duck. “We love having customers that come in and tell us they have never tried Shanghainese cuisine,” Wang said. “Everyone has been so receptive and from their feedback, they’re thankful we have a menu that is easy to order from, especially for first-time customers.” The restaurant is also eagerly looking forward to welcoming guests during its first holiday season. “The holidays are all about friends and family,” Wang said, “so we are most excited about sharing our food and making memories with our customers and the Monterey community.” jackbao.com (831) 215-1703 Jack’s Bao TED Talks

John Steinbeck marveled at the discoveries around every corner inside Pacific Biological Laboratories, located at 800 Cannery Row then, same as it is now. This nondescript, wooden structure is called Doc’s Lab in Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row and the marine biologist within was referred to only as Doc. In real life, Doc was Ed Ricketts, the novelist’s friend and frequent collaborator. Ricketts is immortalized in Cannery Row and The Log from the Sea of Cortez, considered one of Steinbeck’s most important nonfiction works. Ricketts appears as a memorable character devoted to studying and sharing biology. His lab is described with books, microscopes and specimens collected everywhere—visitors had to grapple with the sights and smells of the various creatures stored inside. In the novel, Steinbeck writes, “If money came in, he bought laboratory equipment. It never occurred to him to buy a new blanket for himself.” This passion resulted in not only an immortal character, but also in a book of Rickett’s own. The scientist published Between Pacific Tides in 1939. This text is considered a trailblazing study of intertidal ecology, or the analysis of organisms living between low and high tides. Today, visitors can tour Pacific Biological Laboratories on Cannery Row and learn this unassuming building’s impressive history, from its beginnings as the La Esparanza Fish Packing Company, through the Steinbeck years and including its role in launching the Monterey Jazz Festival. Located just steps from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, this museum provides terrific added context to Cannery Row’s rich history. Advance reservations for tours are required. Tours of Doc’s Lab are organized by Monterey Public Library. It sells the creatures of the sea… and sells bugs and snails and spiders and rattlesnakes, and rats, and honey bees and gila monsters. These are all for sale.” —John Steinbeck Doc Ricketts AND HIS LAB 1935, Edwards Ricketts Collection, Photographer Fred Strong, California History Room Archives, Monterey Public Library, Monterey, California. 1948, Edwards Ricketts Collection, Photographer George Robinson, California History Room Archives, Monterey Public Library, Monterey, California.
