Just ask. For the unfamiliar, atole is a winter dream—warm milk with cinnamon and thickened with flour or corn masa. Flavors vary, from a unique elote, to familiar chocolate and vanilla, to fruity options. But cinnamon is a must. It becomes a warm seasonal drink that can easily compete with a pumpkin spice latte or hot chocolate. Atole will be served in Salvadorian El Migueleño restaurant in Seaside through the winter season. El Milagro restaurant, also in Seaside, and Culturas Hidalgo & Oaxaca restaurant in Salinas, also both began offering the drink leading up to Christmas. Atole typically accompanies tamales and is very popular during Day of the Dead at the beginning of November and Las Posadas, which encompasses the holiday season. A traditional “comfort food,” atole is a favorite for breakfast or an after-dinner snack on cold days—one can find it in the form of porridge. There are clues that suggest that the drink is of Mayan origin. It remains popular not only in Mexico, but also in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua and also in New Mexico, as well as in Monterey County. The name of atole comes from the language Nahuatl, an indigenous language spoken in Mexico and Central America since at least the seventh century. Pick Flour Atole is a warming winter treat.
