38 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY DECEMBER 12-18, 2024 www.montereycountynow.com Send ideas to calendar@montereycountynow.com HOT PICKS ing Peter Barnes Martin (the jazzy guitar virtuoso who recently opened for John Hiatt at Golden State), the psychedelic-infused Squid Brain (see story, p. 42) and the ever-popular Chuck Brewer Band. Headlining is the bassist for Pink (and Moby, Cher, Veruca Salt…) Eva Gardner, soloing her own material on guitar. The festival benefits local veterans programs, as well as gives local bands more exposure. Tickets available at the door or at the Carmel American Legion post during normal hours. [DF] 2-10pm Saturday, Dec. 14. American Legion Post 512, Dolores Street between 8th and 9th avenues, Carmel. $30; $100/pack of four. 624-9941. PSYCHEDELIC SOUND Live music and nostalgia seamlessly mix together at Recycled Records. Turista, a local instrumental band, performs inside the record store. The band has been around since 2021 with three members: guitarist Alex Ramirez, bassist Truitt Grant and Clark Russell on the drums. The trio plays instrumental alternative rock with touches of shoegaze and psychedelic. The band has played in Bay Area venues and in Monterey County. When the trio rehearses they use projectors with black and white images to get into the mood, but during the live performances, Nelson Basden from Lumiere Alchemical uses projectors and food coloring to create a visual psychedelic flow to go along with the music. Ramirez says this performance is special because all the bandmates have strong connections with records. “We’re very excited, because we’ve never done a show inside a record store, and we come from a background of music. We all collect vinyl. We work in vinyl,” Ramirez says. [CJ] 6pm Saturday, Dec. 14. Recycled Records, 604 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey. Free. 3755454. Wednesday, Dec. 18 BIG SOUND Big band jazz music is fitting for any time of year, but there’s just something perfect about it as a soundtrack to a nostalgic, feel-good, seasonal party. And Sunset Center hosts a community party, open to all, to join in the festivities—Santa sleds into the lobby for photo ops from 3-4:30pm before he has to head back to the North Pole to get ready for his busiest day of the year—and a livestream of Jazz at Lincoln Center, featuring vocalists Ekep Nkwelle and Robbie Lee, at 4pm. In between, experience live jazz music by Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star Band members, complimentary holiday cookies and beverages available for purchase. Pay what you can, and bring a new, unwrapped toy for a toy drive if you can. It’s the season for giving. [SR] 3-6pm Wednesday, Dec. 18. Sunset Center, San Carlos at 9th Avenue, Carmel. Pay what you can. 620-2048, sunsetcenter.org. Hot Picks by Erik Chalhoub, Dave Faries, Celia Jiménez, Pam Marino, Agata Pope˛da, Katie Rodriguez, Sara Rubin and David Schmalz. The trio Turista plays at Recycled Records on Dec. 14. The vinyl venue is fitting for a band that employs psychedelic visuals, backdrops often used in the 1960s, the era when records dominated.
