The Al Firdaus Ensemble offers a musical portal to a spiritual world and also to an international world—they are based in Granada, Spain, but draw inspiration widely, from flamenco, music therapy tradition on the Iberian Peninsula, Celtic, Sudanese, Syrian music and more. [SR] 3-5pm Sunday, Nov. 17. International School auditorium, 1720 Yosemite St., Seaside. $30. palenkearts.org. Tuesday, Nov. 19 FIDDLE ME THIS There are some rules of etiquette to go over before attending an Otter Opry event. First of all, hootin’ and hollerin’—just fine, perhaps even encouraged. Britches instead of slacks—definitely. Referring to a fiddle as a violin—big no-no. Now, down to the fun. The California Bluegrass Reunion features some of the country’s best players, including Grammy award-winner John Reischman on mandolin and banjo picker Bill Evans, who earned the Steve Martin award. There are others to name, but it’s a list too long for this space. [DF] 7pm Tuesday, Nov. 19. Monterey United Methodist Church, 1 Soledad St., Monterey. $40; $35/members; free/ages 15 and under. otteropry.org. Wednesday, Nov. 20 BOMBS AWAY While some might argue the atomic bombs America dropped on Japan in World War II, causing the country to surrender, saved both Japanese and American lives, it doesn’t negate the fact that nuclear attacks are horrific, or that the bombing victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were largely civilians. Twelve of those victims were American POWs, and Shigeaki Mori, a Japanese atomic bomb survivor from Hiroshima, has dedicated his life to telling their stories as part of an effort to have a world without nuclear weapons. [DS] 4-6:30pm Wednesday, Nov. 20. McCone Irvine Auditorium, 499 Pierce St., Monterey. Free. middlebury.edu. COOL BEANS Beans is a feature film, released in 2020, based on true events that occurred in Quebec, Canada, when a group of Mohawk tribal members protested to protect a pine forest on their native land from being cut down to make way for a golf course. It’s a film about standing up for what’s right, and protecting what’s left. The Sunset Center is screening the movie at a time where that message is as salient as ever, as we stumble into an uncertain and perhaps chaotic future. You don’t always win when you fight, but you always lose when you don’t. [DS] 7pm Wednesday, Nov. 20. Sunset Center, San Carlos Street at 9th Avenue, Carmel. Free. 620-2048, sunsetcenter.org.
