www.montereycountynow.com NOVEMBER 7-13, 2024 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 29 MUSIC Ryan Cobar, also known as Nathan Sadly, is having a blast leading the crowd of CSU Monterey Bay students in a chant of “make every day a weekend” at Sixth Avenue Studios. “This has been the funnest couple months of my whole life,” Cobar later posted on Instagram. His outlook is a far cry from when Cobar struggled with mental health and isolation during the pandemic. He lost his job, partner and apartment, which led to a move to Pacific Grove for a fresh start. Thankfully, he found a support system—led by his mom, who encouraged Cobar to attend college—as well as professors and inspiring friends who challenged him. “It can feel like music is oversaturated,” Cobar says of the struggle to make an impact. “But I found people who love what I’m doing and make me feel like there is no limit to my potential. They gave me the idea that what we are doing [as artists] is important— if not to anyone else, then for us and to continue to be enough to sustain us.” Released in September, Cobar’s first album—Red Matter, which he wrote, produced and created all on his own— is about coping. Though free studio help was offered, Cobar wanted this album to be an expression of himself. “I hate myself/I can tell that you never really cared/not fine, not fine, no time, no money,” he sings in the single that shares the album’s name. Cobar then goes into a rap, and the effect is as if you’re listening to voices in his head. As the song progresses, Cobar gets louder and ends with a scream. In the accompanying video, Cobar’s intense stare, overlaid with a striking red hue, puts his own production stamp on the single. It’s easy to see why he wants to have his hand on every aspect of his music. “Dial Tone” is about waking up to a breakup phone call. “I told you like a million times/I called you” are lyrics over a C Major 7 chord in a technique called shell voicing. The effect is meant to sound like Cobar sampled from another song. Pursuing a degree in music technology, Cobar produces his songs from start to finish, enabling him to add subtle touches such as in his trademark looping videos. For his next show, Cobar is joined by post-punk singer/songwriter Kayla. “She’s a big reason to come,” he says. “She’s going places.” Nathan Sadly performs 8pm, Saturday, Nov. 9.
