Friday, Nov. 1 Painting with Words Heidi McGurrin, a poet, artist and photographer, has been rooted in the Monterey Peninsula for generations. Her great-grandmother, Jane Gallatin Powers, had a painting studio in Carmel nestled among sand dunes and eucalyptus trees. The Peninsula is a place that speaks to her, and she speaks about it, whether through poetry, paintings or photographs, and teaching local school students her craft. McGurrin has only started sharing her poetry publicly since 2017, and this a chance for folks to come hear her speak her truth, “To be able to disappear | inside yourself.” [DS] 5:30-7pm Friday, Nov. 1. Featured work focuses on democracy, feminism and other social and political issues that have long been elements of their work. “While living in a political climate that is often overwhelming, creating and experiencing art is one way we cope with the anxiety of our times,” Holly says. “Art offers a path to processing the trials of today and turns them into something tangible, something that can inspire others to keep fighting.” They are giving 20 percent of proceeds from sales of their art to Democratic candidates. The exhibit closes Nov. 6, the day after Election Day. His subject matter for the last two decades has been field workers of Monterey County, a visual continuation of what writer John Steinbeck was committed to, documenting the struggle of the perpetual underdog. But before Chang transitioned, already in his 40s, to fine art, he became famous as an illustrator for Atari. While living in New York and Los Angeles, Chang started teaching drawing and painting in the most prestigious art schools, such as the Pratt Institute. It was around that time, the late 1990s, when he decided to transition to fine art. This new work, an 8-by-10-inch oil painting, is viewable in the gallery on Dolores Street between Ocean and 7th avenues in Carmel.
