BUG OUT When people think of rivers, they may not think of bugs. But bugs, like rivers, are crucial components of their ecosystem, and wherever one finds water, one also finds bugs. This event, with Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, highlights that relationship with respect to the Carmel River, and attendees get a hands-on, walking lecture—about a mile round-trip—to see it firsthand. [DS] 2-5pm Sunday, Oct. 27. Palo Corona Discovery Center, 4860 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel. Free. 372-3196, mprpd.org. ENRICO SUAVE The last time the Rick Forschino Trio played the Cherry Center, they brought down the sold-out house. This time, the event promises to be much bigger. After all, two years ago they covered the works of Michel Petrucciani. For this appearance, the trio performs a selection from Enrico Pieranunzi. And if you’re thinking that Petrucciani is a former Ferrari F1 driver and this Enrico guy had something to do with Naked Gun, then you need to wise up to the world of modern jazz. With 60 albums and almost 1,000 original pieces, Pieranunzi is the man. And the Rick Forschino Trio is the one group that can bring his music to the stage. [DF] 2pm Sunday, Oct. 27. Carl Cherry Center, 4th Avenue and Guadalupe Street, Carmel. $35. 624-7491, carlcherrycenter.org. GETTING JIGGY It’s fair to think of John Doyle and Mick McAuley as Irish music royalty. They are members of the super-group Solas, and as a duo deliver the sounds that have become synonymous worldwide with modern Irish music. Both men have been touring for decades, comfortable in the world of traditional Irish music and pushing the boundaries of the genre. And they can hold their own on any stage (Doyle has accompanied Joan Baez, McAuley has accompanied Mary Chapin Carpenter). [SR] 3pm Sunday, Oct. 27. St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 146 12th St., Pacific Grove. $30/in advance; $35/at the door; $12/children in advance; $15/children at the door. 224-3819, celticsociety.org. COMPACT CANON Compact Disco, a small but hot dance space, is teaming up with a theater company that is well acquainted with small and unconventional venues, New Canon Theatre Co. Together, they present Monterey’s first-ever Creatives Ball. From artists to stylists, musicians, designers, architects, actors, playwrights and photographers, join and mingle. A portion of drink proceeds go to New Canon. Costumes are optional, but remember—this is a gathering of creatives, so don’t be afraid to go big. [AP] 5pm Sunday, Oct. 27. Compact Disco, 420 Tyler St., Monterey. Free. 920-2518, compactdisco.org. Hot Picks by Erik Chalhoub, Dave Faries, Celia Jiménez, Pam Marino, Agata Pope˛da, Katie Rodriguez, Sara Rubin and David Schmalz. Thanks to the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay, our community is exposed to a steady stream of Irish and Celtic music—in this case, members of super-group Solas performing at St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Grove.
