Thursday, Oct. 24 Symphonic Synergy South Indian percussionist Anantha Krishnan and pianist Wang Jie describe their collaboration as a “musical masala” where “biryani meets Beethoven.” Flavors on the plate are not oft used to describe music, but in this case it makes sense: Indian cuisine contains some of the most complex flavor profiles on Earth that—depending on the verb—sing or dance on the palate. As Krishnan beats on his mridangam (an Indian drum) and Jie strokes the keys, visitors are invited to let themselves go in the music, to let it resonate through their minds and bodies. Thursday-Friday, Oct. 24-25 Fast Impact Brevity can be a beautiful thing. When done right, it gets a point across in a clear and concise way, and everyone can make it home in time for dinner. Politicians, take note. But it’s also a challenge—how do you pack so much into so little? That’s the task playwrights with Soapbox Stageworks tackled in their upcoming Playfest ’24, a series of seven 10-minute plays. The plays take on heavy topics such as sexual misconduct and homelessness, as well as some lighthearted commentary on artists and the search for perfection. They’re all done in 10 minutes, so if you blink a few times, you may miss them. Ten percent of proceeds benefit the Arts Council for Monterey County. [EC] 7pm Thursday-Friday, Oct. 24-25. Aquarium shows works by Anne Downs and Wilda Northrop (whose piece is shown above), marking a joyful milestone to honor 40 years since the Monterey Bay Aquarium opened—and Northrop and Downs both became charter members. Both artists, mothers of young children at the time, found inspiration in the vibrant underwater world of Monterey Bay on display. Forty years ago, Northrop was also juried into the Carmel Art Association, marking the beginning of their friendship. Their artwork tells stories of the sea, from a playful gathering of clownfish to the mesmerizing sea life drifting through Monterey Bay’s kelp forests. Each piece is a celebration of life beneath the surface, where nature’s colors and movement shine. This artwork is currently on display in the Reflections Elegante Gallery (271 Alvarado St., Monterey). The artist’s subjects are diverse: landscapes, seascapes, figurative and floral. While she loves working with oil on canvas, sometimes she likes to use different media and techniques for painting. View more at valentinaspalette.com.
