Indigenous peoples set fires to regenerate the landscape and harvest seeds, and after them, homesteaders in places like Big Sur set controlled burns in the spring to clear the understory from the land. And always, there have been fires ignited by lightning. Author, poet and artist Obi Kaufmann comes to town to talk about all those things, highlighted in his latest book, The State of Fire: Why California Burns, which is illustrated with his watercolor maps and paintings. Kaufmann talks about lessons we can learn from the state’s biggest fires, and why we should think about fire as regenerative, not apocalyptic. [DS] 5:30-7pm Saturday, Oct. 19. In addition to their original works, the SeaDogs put their own spin on the classics from the ’70s and ’80s. Expect a fusion of vocals, guitar solos and Brazilian- and African-inspired hand drums in this set. Everyone is speaking the same language here. [EC] 7-9pm Saturday, Oct. 19.
