Friday, Oct. 18 For Those About to Rock People love to brag about how they saw a band live before they hit the big time. Maybe it was during an open mic night at a bar or at a local festival, but it was long before they started filling out stadiums. Here’s your chance to discover three local bands that just might become your new favorites. Painted Porch Studios and 6th Avenue Studios are teaming up for their first Rocktoberfest, featuring live music by Squid Brain, Monks of the Blue and Headrush. Food and beer from local vendors are also on tap. The event is a fundraiser for Painted Porch Studios, which provides hands-on education for live events, theater and film. 6th Avenue Studios, meanwhile, holds monthly concerts with local bands, and has a vision for an upcoming celebration and market to support the residents in the new homes sprouting up throughout the former Fort Ord. [EC] 7-11:30pm Friday, Oct. 18. 6th Avenue Studios, 4420 6th Ave., Seaside. $10. bit.ly/3NmcEr6. Friday, Oct. 18-Sunday, Oct. 20 Match Made Well before dating apps were the subject of mockery and delight, there were matchmakers IRL. Perhaps one of the most famous fictional matchmakers is Dolly Levi, an elegant socialite in 1890s New York City. Rule number-one for matchmakers is, of course, don’t fall for your clients, but what’s a rule when there is humor and music and joy to be choreographed for the stage? Santa Catalina School’s theater students perform their take on the beloved musical Hello, Dolly!, with all of the charm, romance and toe-tapping tunes you remember from this classic. [SR] 7:30pm Friday-Saturday, 2pm Sunday, Oct. 18-20; additional shows for parents’ weekend Oct. 25-26. His new show is titled Big Cats and features six original paintings of the world’s largest wild cats. The majestic beauty of these creatures is unique in the animal world. They are the royalty, which leaves people even more in awe of our domesticated cats. We are presenting you with the king of them all (see above). On display until Thursday, Oct. 31. Last spring the local league held a poster contest and sent out entry information to 50 local public and private schools and art programs, asking high school kids to create graphics that extol the importance of voting. After selecting two grand prize winners and eight merit winners, they displayed the posters at local school libraries. Then MRY asked to exhibit the students’ work there, so travelers or general members of the public can get some democratic inspiration from the next generation. On display until late November.
