34 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY September 26-october 2, 2024 www.montereycountynow.com MUSIC Bob Dylan’s work has always been a Rorschach test—and a lightning rod—for his musical peers, as well as his fans. Artists from his former flame Joan Baez to Joan Osborne have offered albums devoted to his work, separated by decades. So have Maria Muldaur of “Midnight at the Oasis” fame and soul songstress Bettye LaVette (check out her version of “Things Have Changed”) and Australian singer-songwriter Emma Swift’s haunting 2020 release, Blonde on the Tracks. The latest offering is from indie rocker Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall), who is promoting her new album, Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert. No, she doesn’t answer the Beatles’ question of how many holes it takes to fill the hall. Instead, she takes on the equally daunting challenge of recreating the setlist from the infamous 1966 Dylan gig where he was booed as a “Judas” for going electric. To make matters even more confusing, the Judas incident actually took place at a concert in Manchester. Cat Power responds to the infidel cry dutifully duplicated here with her own pithy reply: “Jesus.” Regardless of the post-modern conceptual trappings, Power does more than justice to the master’s work here. Her gender-switching rendition of “Just Like A Woman” reveals less misogynistic dimensions to the tune. A rocking version of “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down” and “Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat” summons Beck’s performance of the tune at the 2009 Academy, a fitting venue for its mockery of celebrity culture. And she steps up to the plate on the (inevitable) final track, “Like A Rolling Stone.” In her hands, the famous ask—“how does it feel”—is a question, not a taunt. The song is better for it. Perhaps to the consternation of music business executives who might have preferred she stay in her lane, paying respect to artists she admires is not new ground for Power. Covers in 2020 featured “Bad Religion” by Frank Ocean, “A Pair of Brown Eyes” by The Pogues, Jackson Browne’s anthemic “These Days” and Paul Westerberg’s ode to a barfly “Here Comes A Regular.” So rest assured, her visit to Monterey will be anything but staid. She’s not just covering Bob Dylan, she’s buying him a whole new suit of clothes, pillbox included. Cat Power 8pm Monday, Sept. 30. By Paul Wilner Cat Power is touring with her latest album that covers, song for song, a 1966 Bob Dylan setlist—but as always, her music is much more than a tribute and offers interpretation.
