Sing Out The origins of gospel music, songs of praise for the divine, date back to the 1600s, when enslaved Africans in America would sing in call-and-response. The times and musical tradition have changed, although gospel remains a powerful, vocal-centric style—whether or not you believe in the god that gospel choirs are singing to, you are sure to feel deeply moved. Monterey Peninsula Gospel Community Choir is back on stage with a free concert, fittingly in a church, with words of praise and appreciation and soaring vocals. They perform the next day (Sept. 29) onstage at the Monterey Jazz Festival, closing the loop on how this cornerstone genre has inflected modern music. [SR] 3:30pm doors, 4pm show Saturday, Sept. 28.
