30 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY SEPTEMBER 12-18, 2024 www.montereycountynow.com CULTURE Paris Fashion Week may be happening at the end of the month. Before that illustrious event, however, Monterey County models will be walking a runway set up on the lawn at Henry Miller Memorial Library for the Annual Big Sur Fashion Show. And while the latest in couture who’swho may be a far cry from the humble forested community, the creativity of the team that puts it all together each year is not to be overlooked. “It’s really the spirit [of the event],” says Bill Roden, videographer for the show. “Something comes out—it’s about the heart and soul of the event.” The Big Sur Fashion Show is a tongue-in-cheek play on a traditional fashion show. No fabric may be used in designs, so models are clad in materials like flowers, forest moss, paint and recycled materials. In most cases, designs don’t survive the night. But the creative team feels that this adds to the magic. Viewers, models, designers and hairstylists get to experience the moment just once, then it fades away. There’s just a different ethos for this event. “I actually hate doing updos,” says Sehra Evans, who’s in charge of hair, makeup and all things bling for the Big Sur Fashion Show. “But the fashion show is an opportunity to be completely out-of-bounds.” Magnus Toren, master of ceremonies for the event (and executive director of the Henry Miller Library), understands this aspect and has fun coming up with his own routine to start off the evening. It is his duty to announce each model, designer and design before they come down the runway. “It’s always been really, really fun to do,” Toren says. “It comes naturally.” Each year comes with a different theme that tries to emulate the events that happened in Big Sur from the year prior. This year’s is “Dancing in the Wind: Resilience with Our Storms,” and the audience theme is “Nature’s Disco.” The show is designed to be an expression specifically relevant to Big Sur. “The original founders had to evacuate during the Basin Complex Fire in 2008,” Executive Director Elsa Rivera explains. “After that, we needed to have a party.” In 2008, the house the founders evacuated to had a DVD player with only one watchable DVD at the time. That DVD was Zoolander. And the party is still going, 16 years later. The Big Sur Fashion Show 7-10:30pm, Thursday, Sept. 12. Henry Miller Memorial Library, Big Sur. Sold out. bigsurfashionshow.org.
