28 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY SEPTEMBER 12-18, 2024 www.montereycountynow.com Send ideas to calendar@montereycountynow.com HOT PICKS TUNING UP Led by singer-songwriter Matt Adams, the tunes of The Blank Tapes hit like a ray of sunshine accompanied by cool breeze, or perhaps like hanging out by the Big Sur River on a warm summer day. The L.A.-based band’s songs effuse good vibes, with a mellow, melodic style reminiscent of late-’60s Beach Boys, among others, creating a sound that Adams calls a “groovy, surfy, summer soup peppered with some old country and soul music.” The Blank Tapes are swinging into Fernwood this Saturday night to spread the good cheer, and bonus—it’s free. [DS] 10pm-midnight Saturday, Sept. 14. Fernwood Tavern, 47200 Highway 1, Big Sur. Free. 6672422, fernwoodbigsur.com. Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 14-15 THE GREAT (GLASS) PUMPKIN PATCH There are similarities between a regular pumpkin patch and MEarth’s pumpkin patch, mainly the pumpkins are (mostly) orange and they will break if you drop them. But there’s one key difference: MEarth’s pumpkins won’t rot in a few months. The Glass Pumpkin Patch of Carmel is back in time for the fall season, featuring more than 1,600 hand-blown glass pumpkins created by Carmel Valley artist Nick Leonoff with Nancy Francioli and Kevin Chong. Browse the pumpkins, and sample treats from Faby’s Creations, coffee from BrewBus and kombucha from Julia’s Vegetarian Restaurant. Bilingual musician Moshe Violozny shares his folk and children’s songs on Sunday. A portion of proceeds from pumpkin and food sales support MEarth’s environmental education programs. [EC] 10am-4pm Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15. Hilton Bialek Habitat, 4380 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel. Free. 624-1032, mearthcarmel.org/glass-pumpkin-patch. Sunday, Sept. 15 PIANO WARRIORS Lisa Spector is a piano ninja. She slips quietly into recitals. Tap the wrong key and you hear the unmistakable whir of a razor-sharp blade slicing down toward the errant fingers and…That’s not it? Then what the hell is a piano ninja? Because Lisa Spector, a Juilliard grad who plays piano and leads adult piano retreats in which she shares tricks and techniques that turn music into mind, body and soul is not as riveting. In other words, she makes good pianists great. But Spector and her Piano Ninja Tricksters give a retreat finale concert that is equally riveting, probably even moreso—classical played with joy and verve, no swords or blow darts involved. Best of all, it’s free. Make sure to RSVP. [DF] 3pm Sunday, Sept. 15. Wendi Kirby Music, 550 Hartnell St. Suite F, Monterey. Free. lisaspector.com. Hot Picks by Erik Chalhoub, Dave Faries, Celia Jiménez, Pam Marino, Agata Pope˛da, Sara Rubin and David Schmalz. Lisa Spector is a pianist and also a piano teacher who helps make good pianists great. She brings her “piano ninja” skills to Monterey for a Sunday afternoon concert. Woody don’t know corporate, Woody knows local Stop in today for a locally sourced meal!
