Thursday, Sept. 12 Hollywood Calls Since the beginning of film, Monterey County has been a favorite destination for filmmakers—more than 200 films have been made here. In 1987 the Board of Supervisors created the Monterey County Film Commission to attract more productions, bringing a flow of dollars with them, an estimated $136 million in economic impact. The commission is hosting a special gathering for film enthusiasts, industry professionals and community members at its “Hollywood in Your Backyard Mixer” at LadySomm. It’s a good opportunity to hob knob with insiders and get to know the work of the commission, while sipping on fine wine and nibbling on charcuterie. Space is limited to 70 guests, so check availability. [PM] 4:30-6:30pm Thursday, Sept. 12. LadySomm, 3728 The Barnyard, G-23, Carmel. $15. 646-0910, filmmonterey.org. Intimate Partners Ken Robins knows a thing or two about love and relationships. He taught on both topics for over 30 years at the Esalen Institute and in private practice. Robins brings his wealth of knowledge in a talk, “In the Pursuit of Happiness,” where he’ll lead attendees both didactically and experientially through the agony and ecstasy of intimate relationships, while helping them to learn more about who they are and the people they love. Robins teaches with compassion and humor, and believes in the potential for suffering to become a blessing. It should prove to be an illuminating session. [PM] 6-7pm Thursday, Sept. 12. Pilgrim’s Way Books, Dolores Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, Carmel. $25. 624-4955, pilgrimsway.com. Friday, Sept. 13 More Sunsets Good news. And of course, there’s music. When an opportunity came up to paint a mural at Carmel River Elementary School, which Mabry attended, she jumped at the chance. “I decided to paint a scene that would be both welcoming and reflective,” she shares by email. “The mural depicts the Carmel River, which you can see from the elementary school playground. Overall, I tried to convey a sense of joy that reflected my own memories.” The mural, titled “River Days,” was funded entirely by the fifth-grade Class of 2024 (now in sixth grade) to commemorate their time at River School and to provide a legacy for future River School Otters. This mural replaces an old piece that was removed when Mabry was in kindergarten. “The empty wall left such a void that we knew we had to find something wonderful to replace it,” she adds.
