The 23rd Annual West End Celebration in Sand City is set for August 24-25, 2024. This free, family-friendly event will showcase art, music, and community spirit. Over 170 artists, vendors, and organizations will transform six blocks of Sand City into vibrant galleries and sidewalk theaters. Visitors can enjoy the diverse artistic talents of Monterey County and beyond, with live performances on three stages throughout the weekend. Monterey Glassworks will be holding glassblowing demonstrations at 801 B California Avenue. This design studio and glass manufacturing space is dedicated to building community and educating the public about the art of glassblowing. This year, Monterey Glassworks will host Rob Stern, an international glass artist and Netflix Blown Away contestant, who will showcase his craft alongside the local team. Temple Garage, a gallery space opened by Holly and Ashlee Temple—also known as The Temple Sisters—will feature an exciting lineup of exhibitions. The gallery, located at 542 Ortiz Avenue, will display contemporary California artists through solo and group shows. During the West End Celebration, visitors can explore the current exhibit, “24 Blocks” by photographer Robert Kastigar, which profiles San Francisco’s Chinatown. The festival will also include works from many esteemed local artists. Sylvan Gallery will showcase captivating works by Avelino Sanher, and Jon Paul Magan will open his gallery on Hickory Street. The Youth Arts Collective will engage festival-goers with interactive art displays at a pop-up gallery in the Disaster Kleenup Services building. Local art organizations will join the celebration, offering interactive displays and engaging activities. Notable participants include the Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey Peninsula Art Foundation, Arts Council of Monterey, Open Ground Studios, Art Abilities, Kindness Rocks, and the Carmel High Visual Arts Program. These organizations play a crucial role in fostering a vibrant arts community and providing opportunities for artistic expression in Monterey County. This year, the West End Celebration will honor Craig Hubler, a former City Council member and Sand City artist who passed away last fall. We will celebrate Craig’s contributions to the arts community and his dedication to the West End Celebration throughout the event. Besides the art and interactive displays, festival-goers can enjoy a variety of food and beverages from twenty local vendors, three craft beer vendors (Post No Bills, English Ales, and Other Brother Beer Co.), and a wine tent. Proceeds from the Galante Vineyards and Dawn’s Dream wine tasting tent will benefit the Monterey County Chapter of Guitars Not Guns. Committed to sustainability, the West End Celebration continues its partnership with GreenWaste Recovery and ReGen Monterey to educate guests on effective waste management. ReGen and Disaster Kleenup Specialists will hand out free commemorative reusable drinking cups and host a water station in front of Disaster Kleenup Services. Grab your supplies while they last!. For convenience, the free MST Trolley shuttle will pick up passengers at the bus terminal in the Sand City shopping area and run every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Green Pedal Courier will again provide a free bike valet service at the corner of Ortiz and Contra Costa. Immerse yourself in a weekend of art, music, and community at the 2024 West End Celebration. Revel in the creative spirit, connect with local talents, and make lasting memories with family and friends. westendcelebration.com M P AVELINO SANHER MONTEREY GLASSWORKS THE TEMPLE SISTERS Artwork + article by Rory Glass, By The Glass Design www.montereycountynow.com AUGUST 22-28, 2024 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 21
