JAZZ MASTER If you’ve lived in Monterey County awhile and like jazz music, no doubt you’ve heard Dick Whittington play the piano, or at least heard his name. Whittington grew up in Los Angeles. He came to Monterey County in 1996 and landed in Big Sur in 2004. Since then, he played for years at Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley and Carmel’s Cypress Inn. His first and only instrument is piano, which he first pecked at age 5. “I think jazz found everybody during that time,” Whittington said in a 2018 interview with the Weekly. “Even the pop music of the time was heavily jazz-influenced. Something would come on the radio and I would go to the piano and see how much of it I could figure out.” Check out Dick Whittington Trio live. [AP] 8-11pm Saturday, Aug. 10. Characters Bar (at the Marriott), 350 Calle Principal, Monterey. $30. 649-4234, event.marriott.com. WILD FOX The Fox Theater in Salinas is for sale, but you still can catch events under the current management (see story, p. 10). Do you like KISS, the band? How about Amber Wild, led by Evan Stanley, the son of KISS’ Paul Stanley. Other musicians are guitarist Marshall Via and drummer Thomas Lowrey. The band formed in January 2023; in October, they released a pair of debut singles, “Breakout” and “Silver.” Expect Fiery guitars, thunderous drums, and raw vocals. [AP] 8pm Saturday, Aug. 10. It’s still possible to own these and other cars, at least on paper. VintageAutoPosters.com is holding a poster pop-up, featuring authentic automotive and racing posters from the past.
