The Carmel Art Walk happens the second Saturday of each month, a free, family-friendly event created and run by local artists at 16 different galleries. Follow the blue lanterns outside each participating artist-owned gallery. A good place to start is Dolores Street between 5th and 6th avenues. Friday, Aug. 9 Breakfast of Champions Monterey County’s arts and culture community is thriving. That’s largely thanks to the creativity of a diverse artistic community, working in a variety of media. It’s also thanks to the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bolster the scaffolding of the arts. Every year, the Arts Council for Monterey County celebrates a cross section of these people, known as “Champions of the Arts.” This year’s awards go to abstract realist painter Gregory Gallardo (aka Gregorytheartist) who as a combat veteran channels his PTSD into art; mosaic artist SanDee Adams; and jazz pianist/composer Tammy Lynne Hall, as well as José Arreola for supporting public art and murals in downtown Salinas, and Cyril Yansouni for leadership and philanthropy at the Carmel Bach Festival. Join these creators and advocates for a breakfast celebration honoring the more colorful and inviting world they help create. [SR] 9am Friday, Aug. 9. Marriott (Ferrante Room), 350 Calle Principal, Monterey. $65. 6229060, arts4mc.org/champions. Wharf Wheels It’s a pity there are no prizes that award the allure of alliteration. Would that there were, because Old Fisherman’s Wharf would surely win single-handedly with its Cars, Cocktails & Calamari celebration—pronounce that with a hard C. Stop it, you say? OK, we’ll pause the parade of appealing alliteration long enough to say that restaurants on the wharf are honoring Car Week with car-themed cocktails, calamari dishes and—at least during the nearby RM Sotheby’s auction (Aug. 14-17)—collector cars on display. There is also a Wharf Walk with Tim Thomas (their alliteration, not ours) on Aug. 17 Chamisal is a fitness, tennis and wellness club in sunny Corral De Tierra. In addition to tennis, they also have the latest craze—pickleball. It’s all open to the public at a 50th anniversary celebration.
