Thursday, Aug. 8 Record Scratching Things once considered old and obsolete eventually become trendy again. It’s the circle of life. Take, for instance, vinyl records. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, vinyl album sales in the United States grew for the 17th consecutive year in 2023, totaling 43.2 million, up from less than a million in 2006. The Wine House in Carmel Valley hopes to keep the momentum going with its Vinyl Thursdays events. Each Thursday has a different theme, such as jazz night on Aug. 8 and “mixed bag” night on Aug. 15, where anything goes. You’re encouraged to bring your own vinyl for all to enjoy. This all begs the question: When will cassettes start their comeback? Drinks and small bites available for purchase. [EC] 4-8pm Thursday, Aug. 8. The Wine House, 1 East Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley. Free. 298-7438, thewinehousecv.com. Love Cabaret The Love is in the Air show features performances by singer/storyteller Barbara Brussell and performer Jon-Mark Hurley. Brussell earned a bachelor of fine arts degree on the Monterey Peninsula before studying at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater. She premiered her cabaret act at the famed Gardenia in Los Angeles, where she was a much-lauded “fixture” for more than a decade. Hurley is an actor originally from Monterey, now residing in Los Angeles. He recently starred as Franz Schubert in acclaimed director Bernhard Rose’s film The Hurdy-Gurdy Man (2018). America Martin is an internationally celebrated ColombianAmerican artist. The authentic, magnetic pull of Martin’s work is generated by her ability to express her unique vision that speaks to a universal truth, and her exceptional skill at rendering that truth via the human form. You always know when you see an America Martin painting. By blending Central and South American Indigenous artistic styles with classical Western art traditions, she creates a style of artwork that is absolutely her own. The piece presented above is titled “Woman and Seagull Make Plans.” The second artist featured during the exhibit, Personal, Yet Universal, is Hunt Slonem, known for a distinct neo-expressionist style. A reception is at 5-7pm Friday, Aug. 9. [AP] It’s a fact universally known that kittens love boxes and hiding places. Like people, they value the feeling of being safely inside.
