Thursday, August 1 Panthers’ Roar Asaf Elia-Shalev, who was a staff writer at the Weekly from 2019 to 2021, has written a book about a fascinating topic—racial tensions in Israel, a country with Jews of European ancestry (Ashkenazi) and Jews of North Africa and Middle Eastern ancestry (Mizrahi) among its communities. Published by the UC Press in March of, Shalev’s book, Israel’s Black Panthers: The Radicals Who Punctured a Nation’s Founding Myth, covers the rise of Israel’s Black Panthers in the 1970s, concurrent with the group’s rise at the same time in America. They advocated for civil rights and ending the youth-to-prison pipeline, among other things. In this month’s Mic’d at the Press Club event, Weekly Editor Sara Rubin sits down with Shalev to talk about his yearslong reporting project. There will also be time for audience questions, and his book will be available for sale. [DS] 12:30-1:30pm Thursday, Aug. 1. The Creperie Cafe @ The Press Club, 1123 Fremont Blvd., Seaside. After all, this year marks the 15th occasion of Dave Holodiloff Band’s Annual Jerry Garcia Bluegrass Birthday Bash (and some people say we are wordy), but Garcia played for 30 years—and that’s just with the Grateful Dead. The anniversary performance also accounts for his stints with Old & in the Way, New Riders of the Purple Sage, solo recording, duos and more. This Garcia guy was prolific. Fortunately, so is Holodiloff and the crew of standout musicians he performs alongside. This is not a tribute act, so expect bluegrass riffs on your Dead favorites. But the band does bring the festive party atmosphere. So 15 years down, 15 to go. That’s dead-ication. [DF] 7pm Thursday, Aug. 1. This year, they showcase artwork from their new middle school-aged TAG artists too. Not only can you view their artists’ creations in person at the studio, but the students’ art is featured in YAC’s online gallery (yacstudios.org/exhibits). The young artists have produced short “meet the artist” videos for the online show. Like the artists, these are charming, eclectic and distinct with personality. The above work, titled “Working Out Our Band’s Name,” is by Thirsdei Legg. YAC is a nonprofit art studio and mentorship program for motivated high school and college artists. Their mission is to inspire creativity, kindness and confidence in the youth through artistic expression.
