Yet this is merely a shake—rich, cool, brimming with whipped cream and crumbled chocolate. In this case, the blend is of peanut butter and vanilla, the candy lending it the friendly familiarity of a peanut butter cup. There is, however, a bite to it. Turn 12 in Monterey offers a short list of alcoholic milkshakes. There’s mint chocolate chip with creme de menthe and vodka or peachy dream spiked with Captain Morgan Spiced Rum—pairings considered for complementary flavor. Frangelico seasons the peanut butter version. And they don’t skimp—a shot and a half goes into each. So lurking within the mellow sweetness is a bitter h’ant that approaches with the calm of hazelnut then snaps lightly. The spirit brings a warmth to the finish that clings to the back of the palate and challenges the cool of ice cream. At the same time, the nutty liqueur favors both the peanut butter and chocolate, bringing to them a bittersweet depth. This is a dessert and a bar tab in one. It should be noted that the trend has been around for well over a decade. In fact, the first printed references to a “milkshake” date to the 1880s and describe a whiskey-based punch. Milk and alcohol—they’ve been palled up since the Middle Ages or so. Still, Turn 12’s shakes feel like novelties. Welcome ones, at that.
