www.montereycountynow.com July 18-24, 2024 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 31 MUSIC This could be a close encounter— if you are lucky. Encounters of the Funky Kind and Mariah Garcia of Ruca Records are spinning curated sets of stellar vinyls at Other Brother Beer Co. on Friday, July 19. Space is limited, but the sound is without bounds—timeless music from classic to modern boogie, disco, funk and soul. They come in peace and to get you to boogie. Garcia is known for her sets around the county. She’s hosted Emo Prom, Ladies of Hip Hop, dance parties and indie nights. Garcia began collaborating with other DJs such as Ugly Eye during shows at the Blue Lagoon in Santa Cruz. During Garcia’s sets, she pays attention to flow and how the crowd reacts. Expect fan favorites along with selections from the vault. You can find Zapp & Roger to Chaka Khan in her vinyl crate. She believes it is important to bring more feminine energy into vinyl culture, which was a founding idea for Ruca Records. When Garcia heard Spencer Enriquez was spinning records with Kenji Rei, she booked the duo in a lineup with her at Blue Lagoon. The flow worked well. Soon after, Enriquez and Rei were spinning as Encounters of the Funky Kind. They decided on the name to represent the music they play—and as a nod to George Clinton of Parliament/ Funkadelic. Some things to anticipate are classics, as well as obscure, fun, personalized sets curated by DJ Kenji and DJ Oh-So Ritmico. They work together to find ways to connect one song to another, while reading the crowd for a versatile and dynamic set. You can catch original tracks of recognizable samples for something familiar, but new to some listeners. Garcia, Rei and Enriquez emphasize the importance of community over competition. They set up space for shows and support one another. Catch them on streaming platforms or live at Blue Lagoon, Vertigo in San Juan Bautista, and in Monterey County at venues including Pop and Hiss, Post No Bills and Other Brother Beer Co. Also see them support other DJs at events around the region, like The Mothership Connections at the Blue Lagoon, and upcoming artists like DJ Jarocho. The takeover—for community, collaboration, finding new music, for the love—has commenced. Encounters of the Funky Kind 8:30pm Friday, July 19.
