30 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY JULY 18-24, 2024 www.montereycountynow.com MUSIC Micky Dolenz chuckles as he dismisses the litany of accomplishments over a career in entertainment. “I’m old,” he says. “I’ve had a lot of years to do stuff.” From the age of 11, Dolenz has been on screen or stage, perched in a director’s chair, hosting radio programs and writing books. Of course, it was a brief span in the 1960s that fixed Dolenz in the cultural pantheon. The Monkees featured Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davy Jones in a groundbreaking comedy series about the absurd antics of a struggling rock band. With its ambitious style and anti-establishment theme, the show earned two Emmys. And while the band was an offshoot of the television program, The Monkees recorded three chart-topping singles. Four of their albums reached number one and five went platinum. Despite their success—as well as their influence on many young people—some dismissed the group as manufactured. “A lot of people didn’t get it,” Dolenz observes. “The four of us were the cast of a musical.” He uses Glee as a reference, noting that the cast of musicals typically perform and record albums. No one, Dolenz adds, derides the actors in Glee as a fake glee club. “The Monkees represented all those other kids, the ones who were ‘too busy singing to put anybody down,’ he continues, quoting the series’ theme song. “That theme, if you listen to it, really did give you a nutshell of the television show.” Dolenz and his band will perform Monkees hits, as well as a few deep dives through the album tracks. The stories he spins in between, however, may tell more about the era than his experiences in the group. “I frankly don’t remember a lot in the first person—and not because ‘if you remember the ’60s you weren’t there,’” he explains. “It was the workload.” At a time when television series packed more than 30 episodes into a season and bands were expected to follow one album with another, Dolenz and his comrades often worked well into the night, then were carted off to publicity appearances. (He wrote a memoir of the period with the title I’m Told I Had a Good Time.) “At a certain point your brain shuts off, he says” Micky Dolenz Stories & Songs, 8pm Saturday, July 20.
