Painting Portraits We’ve all heard of the “Mona Lisa.” “Girl with a Pearl Earring”? Sure, it’s a great piece of art. But have you ever looked at these painted portraits and thought, “I can do better”? Now is the time for the rubber to meet the road, or more appropriately, for the paintbrush to meet the canvas. Artist/scientist McKenzie Floyd lead a workshop on the four steps of painting a portrait: sketching, undertones, overtones and the finishing touches using acrylics. Once you finish the class, expect your family and friends to beg you to paint them. Note, some experience is recommended for this workshop. [EC] 1:30-4:30pm Saturday, July 20. That’s not to say he’s disliked—quite the opposite, in fact. Over his 19 years of performing and through nine albums, Eady has refused to sit in one musical place. His most recent album, Mississippi, swelters like the blues of the deep South, with its baked fields of cotton and weathered shotgun shacks. But the singer-songwriter can also fling Texas honky tonk, mountain bluegrass, Americana, modern alt-country and more. Yet he is far from a musical chameleon. No matter which style he chooses to reflect upon, one thing comes through in his lyrics. They are stories that relate truths, whether simple, hard-earned or elusive. So is he grassroots? Country? Folk? Doesn’t matter. Names can never hurt him—or the appeal of his songs. [DF] 7pm Saturday, July 20. SandBox, 440 Ortiz Ave., Sand City. $40; $25/students, military. sandboxsandcity.com. At its core, however, Devil May Care explores the female experience within a “Christian” nation— how growing up in certain contexts with certain moral “rights” and “wrongs” affects a person. Reconsider Me, by Jeff Dinnell, is a kind of “group study” about a circle of friends who have drifted apart. A sudden death brings them back together and catalyzes an examination of the choices they’ve made, and reveals in each of them an abundance of both pain and love. In Is Not That Strange by Brian Gene White, the main character faces off against her past, her family and the world in order to keep her small-town Shakespeare Festival alive. “Each of these stories explores the interconnectedness of our important relationships, revealing humor, forgiveness, gratitude, and love through struggle and strife,” says New Canon’s Noah Lucé. “Whether the love is for others or for ourselves, these narratives resonate deeply, offering profound insights into our shared human experience.” [AP] 7:30 Friday, July 19 Devil May Care; 7:30 Saturday, July 20 Reconsider Me. 2pm Sunday, July 21, Is Not That Strange.
