Thursday, July 18 Homecoming Music Toad the Wet Sprocket has come home to themselves and is inviting everyone to come along. The high school theater friends from Santa Barbara, who named their band after a fake band name in a Monty Python sketch, found success in the early ’90s. Their 1991 album Fear was a commercial success, with two of their songs, “All I Want” and “Walk on the Ocean,” making it to the top 20 of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Band squabbles led to a breakup, but they came back together in 2006. Today, three of the four original band members—Glen Phillips (guitar/lead singer), Todd Nichols (guitar/vocals), Dean Dinning (bass)—are touring, mixing old favorites with new music. Their ethos from their high school days is the same, using music to bring people together. Phillips summed it up in a statement about their performances: “We want people who come to our shows to feel at home for a while.” [PM] 7pm Thursday, July 18. Mali to Miller Born in Mali in 1981, Vieux Farka Touré secretly took to playing guitar against the wishes of his father, Ali Farka Touré, himself a musician renowned all across the continent. By 2007, Touré released a self-titled album that also featured his father, who passed away in 2006. His star quickly rose, so much so that his third album, released in 2011, featured the likes of Dave Matthews. Touré’s music is deeply soothing and filled with mellow guitar riffs, repetitive, chanting vocals and backed by soft, African drumming. It’s hard to imagine a better place than the redwood grove at the Henry Miller Memorial Library to let his music transport you. As always, carpooling is encouraged, as parking is tight. The Zimbabwean stone sculptor is a native of Nyanga, and she is the daughter of firstgeneration sculptor Claud Nyanhongo and sister of Gedion Nyanhongo. She spent much time helping in her father’s studio as a girl and began sculpting full-time in 1980. Stylistically, Nyanhongo’s work is very similar to that of her father and takes as its theme mainly female issues. Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelou are among the many owners of her pieces. Artist Sherry McGlothlin has her cow skull art on display there, just in time for California Rodeo Salinas. “There are several other artists whose paintings, photography and jewelry fit well with the rodeo spirit,” McGlothlin writes in an email, reminding us all that fine art can merge quite nicely with a rough-and-tumble sport. The gallery has been located in the heart of Steinbeck country since 1976. In addition to McGlothlin’s mosaics, it houses such names as painter Ruth Carroll, photographer Jo Ann Moline, sculptor and illustrator Rosiland Solomon, ceramics by Jeannette Jennings and much more.
