Friday, July 12-Sunday, July 14 Whippet Good If we had to guess, we’d say Vizsla is the new 1,200 horsepower supercar from Austria. Great Pyrenees? Easy one. A mountain range. Rhodesian Ridgeback— that’s a wrestling move that’s been banned by…Yeah, yeah. Wrong on all three. Instead, they are breeds of dogs that you can see (along with the Bernese Mountain Dog, the Portuguese Water Dog, the Norwegian Elkhound and more) at the Del Monte Kennel Club Dog Show. The dogs—there will be about 5,000 of them—will compete over three days in such disciplines as obedience and rally. There will be judging, awards and general gawking at rare breeds (and yes, there will be Golden Retrievers and other more familiar dogs, too). While entry is free, there is a $10 parking fee. Saturday, July 13 Country Vibes Perhaps nothing communicates “community spirit” better than a good old-fashioned country fair. The Cachagua Country Fair is an annual celebration of this rural community, but of course it’s open to anyone who wants to get in on the vibe (except dogs). Expect down-home energy and continuous live music; a 4-H petting zoo; horseback rides; a horseshoe tournament (sign-ups begin at 9am); a bounce house; and lots of local arts and crafts vendors, many of them making things out of materials specifically of the locale. Beer and wine are for sale. The chicken and tri-tip meal, grilled by members of the Cachagua Volunteer Fire Company, supports the firefighters. Proceeds from everything else go directly back to the Cachagua Community Center—in keeping with the community spirit. [SR] Noon-6pm Saturday, July 13. Cachagua Community Center, 37210 Nason Road, Carmel Valley. Free. 252-0038, cachaguacommunitycenter@gmail.com. In between tile jobs, he has always kept busy in his home-studio throwing pots and creating sculptures, working primarily with clay. From now on, Chappell will devote himself full-time to his art. He has a retrospective exhibit at the Sylvan Gallery, 613 Ortiz Ave., Sand City, titled Fertility. His affinity for natural materials is apparent in all his works. His experience and experimentation culminated in the production of tables, lamps, fountains and ceramic creations. Most recently Chappell has been designing jewelry incorporating fossils and semi-precious stones. The gallery is open on weekends — Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14, as well as Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21.
