26 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY JUNE 20-26, 2024 www.montereycountynow.com Send ideas to calendar@montereycountynow.com HOT PICKS CELEBRATING FREEDOM Juneteenth continues to thrive in Salinas with the fourth annual celebration at Hartnell College. The theme this year is: Participate in our freedom. “We want to remind people that freedom is something that’s cherished,” organizer Kendra Cabrera says. It’s also a work in progress that requires continuous participation. The event offers an array of live performances including jazz, drums and spoken word. Other highlights include a multimedia exhibition of Beyond Bullwhip Days by local artist Germain Hatcher and a drum circle that invites attendees to learn and play drums (or just listen). The event highlights the contributions and culture of Black people in the Salinas Valley and beyond that is part of our collective history. [CJ] 1-5pm Saturday, June 22. Hartnell College, 411 Central Ave., Salinas. Free; first 200 attendees receive a complimentary meal. salinasjuneteenth.com. Monday, June 24 THE JIGGER’S UP Cella Restaurant hosts the Coastal Cocktail Clash, pitting a dozen bartenders and their mixology skills against each other in a battle to the bitters end…sorry, just a bit of rye humor. These aren’t the sort of bartenders that fizz out when things turn sour. The event brings the best, from establishments like Chez Noir, Foray, Stokes Adobe, Hula’s, Montrio and more. And it’s bound to be a cordial competition, even in the fifth round. No lowball blows here, just high-end cocktails. There will be food (the best, from Chef Cal Stamenov) and drink specials (also the best, thanks to Cella’s Joshua Perry—who is not in the clash, which would be a twist). Do you need any more proof? There’s no need to mull it over. This event rocks. [DF] 6pm Monday, June 24. Cella Restaurant, 525 Polk St., Monterey. $27/in advance; $30/at the door. 920-1046, opentable.com. Wednesday, June 26 MUSIC EXPLORER Todd Rundgren is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and record producer who has performed a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of the band Utopia. He is known for his unorthodox music, flamboyant stage outfits and his later experiments with interactive entertainment. Rundgren also produced innovative music videos, pioneered forms of multimedia, and was an early adopter and promoter of various computer technologies, such as using the internet as a means of music distribution in the late 1990s. A native of Philadelphia, Rundgren began his professional career in the mid-1960s, forming the psychedelic band Nazz in 1967. [AP] 8pm Wednesday, June 26.
