We’re not going to calculate, considering the many dozen Monterey County labels producing several varietals year after year. Meanwhile Patrick Jackson, a veteran of Joullian Vineyards and Morgan winery, has released two wines, a 2021 Albariño and a 2019 Grenache. Actually, Jackson prefers Garnacha for the latter as there is a reverence for traditional methods—not only organic, but also stomped by foot. Almost shy on the nose, it offers beckoning gestures of plum, strawberries, rosemary and fern, with just a vague whisper of leather. The flavors are more pronounced than the bouquet allows, with steady fruit—ranging from lush cherry to fresh, lean strawberry—and a crinkle of cracked pepper that eases into a dry, herbal finish. The albariño was whole cluster pressed under cool conditions, although not stomped. Still, the process brings out fruit in full expression, starting with an aromatic hint of exotic mango under brisk citrus and honeysuckle. Following through on the palate, the fruits are fresh and smooth, tempering the lurking bittersweet wrath of grapefruit. It’s a bright wine, but hardly lean and sparse. Both are worth exploring, despite being hard to find. Trixon is a small and young operation—just a few barrels of each were produced.
