40 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY MAY 2-8, 2024 www.montereycountyweekly.com CHILL Nothing against Chardonnay, but given Massa Estate’s 2019 vintage, we deserve more Chenin Blanc. The winery justifiably promotes its sparkling version. But in still form, the Chenin Blanc also glimmers, inviting you with summertime aromas of fresh yellow apples, peaches ripening in the orchard and hay turning from green to gold. And it is indeed a wine bright with the promise of clear skies and warming afternoons. The varietal is known for its acidity, and Massa Estate’s Chenin Blanc is crisp and lean, but not without intrigue. A sip bursts with juicy apple and the zing of quince, softened by a notion of freshly squeezed tangerine on the finish. Resting under the brisk fruit are more serene impressions, such as a tickle of ginger and a soft graham flour, all grounded by a touch of minerality. Massa’s is a dry style, light in body with a modest finish that brings out the zesty citrus and ginger. Although much of the world’s Chenin Blanc is grown in South Africa, the grape is gaining in popularity here. The vines take to stress—a plus, because Massa’s wines are organic and the vineyards subject to dry farming techniques. Chenin Blanc is also ready for anything—seafood, pork, Korean fried chicken, vegetarian fare or just sipping on a casual summer day. And Massa’s is a Chenin Blanc beacon. Word of warning, however. There’s not much left on the shelves. Massa Estate, 69 W. Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley. 659-6220, massaestate.com. Blanc Slate Massa Estate showcases the versatility and flavor of Chenin Blanc.
