Barajas City Clerk Salinas, California Donald MacKinnon 16 September 1934 – 11 March 2024 Donald Smith MacKinnon, proud veteran of the US Air Force, passed away from cancer on Monday, 11 March 2024. The son of Smith and Dorothy MacKinnon, Don was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on 16 September 1934 and grew up in Noblesville, Indiana. Don lived a life devoted to God, family, and country. Don attended Chaminade University, earning a BA, and USC, earning an MS. At 21 years of age, Don entered the US Air Force and studied to become a C-130 Pilot. Don served as a C-54 Aircraft Commander stationed in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and served in flying and operational roles at Cape Canaveral / Patrick AFB, the Caribbean, South Atlantic, and Africa. During his distinguished Air Force career, Don served as an AC-130 Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot. Don served twice as Command Flight Examiner for all C-130 aircraft in Air Force Systems Command, and was Director of Logistics for the 6594th Test Group and Director of Operations and Engineering for a fleet of C-130 and HH-53 aircraft stationed at Hickam AFB. He also supported classified space and missile R&D projects. Don highly valued his service to the USA as an Air Force Officer and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. Don was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and numerous other citations. After military service, Don worked on defense contracts managing programs for NASA, the USAF Test and Evaluation Mission Simulator, and the Space Shuttle. Don held an FAA Commercial Pilot License and was Multi-Engine Instrument Rated in Lockheed 382 and DC-4 aircraft. Don was a member of the Air Force Association, Retired Officers Association, Vintage Pilot Squadron, Quiet Birdmen, and Knights of Columbus. During active retirement, Don and his wife, Nancy, volunteered for 16 years at Meals on Wheels in Pacific Grove. Don took great pride in his final job working for over 17 years as a part-time Transportation Driver at the Pebble Beach Company. Don liked working at Pebble Beach so much that he took his family there for special occasions. Don took delight when his co-workers welcomed his family like royalty at The Lodge at Pebble Beach. His eyes lit up when he spoke about working in the Air Force, aviation, working at Pebble Beach, his family, and his wife of 63 years, Nancy. The only thing Don valued more than his service to the USA was his service to his family and his faith in the Lord. Don is survived by Nancy, his devoted wife, and their five children and ten grandchildren. Don’s loved ones will remember his intelligence, quick wit, kindness, good looks, love for Jazz and wisdom. Don will be greatly missed by family and friends. A service honoring the life of Don MacKinnon will be held at St. Jude Church in Marina, California, followed by interment with full military honors at the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery in Seaside, California.
