Peter was born on May 6, 1929, in Monterey, the second son of Horace and Mary Coniglio. He was the grandson of Pietro Ferrante, a pioneer in the Monterey sardine fishing industry. Peter graduated from Monterey High School in 1947, and from Santa Clara University in 1951 with honors. Peter enlisted in the United States Air Force, attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1953. He then attended the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he graduated first in his class in 1956. Peter returned to Monterey and joined the law firm of Hudson, Martin, Ferrante & Street in 1958, became partner in 1960, and practiced law for nearly six decades. Peter was a lifelong public servant and honored to be a leader in the community. He served on numerous organizations and boards, including the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, AT&T Pro-Am, the Monterey Museum of Art, the History and Art Association, where he chaired La Merienda barbecue committee for forty-five years, the Italian Heritage Society, the Monterey Commercial Property Association, the Monterey County Bar Association, the Cancer Society, the Santa Clara University Board of Regents, and many more. To each of these, he brought his unique vision, paired with tireless work and dedication to see things through and get things done. Peter received many accolades, most notably the Citizen of the Year award for outstanding service to the City of Monterey, the Laura Powers award from the History and Art Association, and the Gibson Award from the Monterey County Bar Association. Peter leaves a remarkable legacy of service to his beloved City of Monterey. The Monterey Conference Center was built under Peter’s vision and guidance, which he dedicated as his last official act before leaving office. As a person of faith, Peter accepted life’s challenges and opportunities with a spirit of optimism and gratitude. He cherished his Sicilian heritage and his lifelong friendships. Peter was known for his generosity, sense of humor, engaging storytelling and eloquent public speaking. As a trusted friend and advisor, you could always count on Peter to help those in need. Peter was most proud of his loving family and was profoundly grateful for their encouragement as he journeyed through life. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine “Rena” Coniglio, parents Horace and Mary Coniglio, brothers Philip and John Coniglio, and his ex-wife Patricia Coniglio.
