44 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY January 25-31, 2024 www.montereycountyweekly.com CHILL A good pale lager wants a clear summer day, perhaps a ballgame. Barring that, it is ready for those moments when something light and easy has appeal. Despite the prevalence of golden-hued beers, lagers are versatile— ranging in color from light straw to seedy black. And they have a heady past. One style of lager is a feature of Oktoberfest tradition. The result of bottom fermentation and stored at cool temperatures, pale lagers—and spicier pilsners—gleam from the glass. It is said that the Czech version brewed in Plzn was the first beer deemed fit for presentation in a clear mug. Of course, mass-produced American lagers have tarnished the style, at least among some craft beer aficionados—an unfortunate turn, because a nice lager brings character as well as refreshment. Take the new Seaside Lager at Other Brother Beer Co., for instance. It invites you to pass the time with a blush of tropical fruit that welcomes you at first on the nose and then as you sip, presenting a sweet face of citrus followed by a light, waving sensation of grain. A wisp of bitter spice drifts through the pleasantries, a sprightly reminder that hops were involved. Otherwise, this is a fresh, lean brew that finishes with a quick, clean snap. At just a tick over 4-percent alcohol, it’s a nice drinking beer for any occasion. In other words, Seaside Lager is a nod to the classic helles-style brew that brought such popularity. Other Brother Beer Co., 877 Broadway Ave., Seaside. 747-1106, otherbrotherbeer.com. Way Cool Other Brother offers a reminder of why pale lagers gained mass appeal.
