EDUCATION & YOUTH DONATE ONLINE MCGIVES.COM ATTPBJRGOLF.COM BIG IDEA: The Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association’s Big Idea helps remove barriers local youth may face if they wish to learn golf. PBJGA offers free beginner golf clinics, taught by local pros at some of the most scenic and impressive golf courses around Monterey Bay. Students who progress with PBJGA can participate in small group clinics and tournaments, conducted in a supportive, educational environment. Donations ensure everyone is welcome to learn golf through PBJGA. “I have been playing in Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association tournaments since I was 7. Competing with other female golfers has allowed me to grow tremendously. Usually, I was paired up randomly with girls I did not know. When I was younger, I struggled with this concept. But as I continued to compete in these tournaments, I learned how to effectively interact with these girls, creating lifelong friendships. Another way PBJGA has challenged me is through learning proper sportsmanship in competition. Strengthening this skill has been difficult but rewarding. I experienced finishing in both first place and last place countless times. I learned the importance of being a good sport on and off the course, win or lose. Without Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association, I would not be person that I am today.” -Sophie Southard READ TO ME PROJECT YEAR FOUNDED: 2011 PAID STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS: 7 paid, 20 volunteers BUDGET: $483,639 275-1300 READTOMEPROJECT.ORG BIG IDEA: The Read to Me Project’s (RtMP) Big Idea coaches students in fourth through sixth grade on the best ways to read to young children. While they might be young themselves, many students—nearly half of participants in RtMP programs—are the only people reading to preschoolers (such as younger siblings or cousins) at home. Donations to RtMP help support programs that mobilize students, parents and child care providers in ways to promote literacy, the foundation for every child’s educational success and overall well-being. “I’ve witnessed how the Read to Me Project provides wonderful opportunities to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students look forward to spending quality time with younger siblings each day before and after school. These simple routines provide opportunities for nurturing the children’s curiosity while supporting a strong foundation of creativity, imagination, and plenty of time to ‘play’ with languages before formally being introduced to academic vocabulary in school. Furthermore, older siblings shared how they appreciated opportunities to model good reading habits and enjoyed being role models for their family members. I’m so grateful for the Read to Me Project and honored to be a part of this wonderful program’s lasting legacy.” -William Franzell 96 Monterey County GIVES! 2023 mcgives.com HELP THE STUDENTS IN THE WOMEN’S EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (WELI) AND THE MEN’S INSTITUTE FOR LEADERSHIP AND EDUCATION (MILE) PROGRAMS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS THROUGH Donate at montereycountygives.com/hartnell !
