Coming into GBA, I was nervous, shy, and didn’t know what to expect. GBA has opened a room full of opportunities for me as I have gotten the chance to travel across the world. The experiences that come with GBA are unmatched. It is not only a transformative experience, but life-changing. Through GBA, you are able to make an impact on other people, as well as be impacted by others. Studies show youth who read four to six books during the summer prevent the “summer slide,” or a loss of skills that can keep students from progressing academically. In addition to reading, youth receive activity bags featuring diverse themes, win book giveaways and prizes and can enjoy cultural performances at all of the library’s 17 far-flung branches located throughout Monterey County. “We are writing to tell you what an impact the ‘Drumming with Onye’ program had in bringing our community together to introduce the Summer Reading Club! Having an activity at the Bookmobile makes a huge difference in attendance, and we were so thankful to have Onye to energize all our attendees.” -Rose and Mike Lovell spotlight I am the first and only Latina woman who has transferred from Hartnell Community College to Stanford University.” Jane Hernandez, Hartnell College Foundation
