ARTS & CULTURE DONATE ONLINE MCGIVES.COM TOR HOUSE FOUNDATION YEAR FOUNDED: 1978 PAID STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS: 2 paid, 24 volunteers BUDGET: $118,000 624-1813 TORHOUSE.ORG BIG IDEA: The Tor House seeks to expand on its previous efforts to provide visitors a more holistic view of poet Robinson Jeffers, who built the stone tower that makes this Carmel property so unique. While the poetic works and history of this writer remains the focus of Tor House tours, details about Jeffers’ influence in the arts, ecology and issues of his time—including Indigenous land rights and the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II—make his work relevant today. This Big Idea is to recruit more tour docents, support First Friday musical programs and an annual fall festival, sharing that with a greater number of visitors. “After the inspiring musical tour yesterday at Tor House, I would like to be a member/supporter. I learned so much more about the Jefferses’ life and their respect for the beauty and power of nature, as well as their concern for the fragility of the Earth. Thank you again for such a life-changing afternoon.” -Meredith Mullins YOUTH ARTS COLLECTIVE (YAC) YEAR FOUNDED: 2000 PAID STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS: 10 paid, 50 volunteers BUDGET: $450,055 375-9922 YACSTUDIOS.ORG BIG IDEA: Is there a young artist for whom high school art classes just aren’t enough? The Youth Arts Collective exists to nurture these promising artists with an after-school art studio for students ages 14 to 22. This Big Idea supports a vibrant community of young artists who share a passion and develop a safe but challenging environment for self-expression. Professional artists mentor YAC students in their technique but also in life skills—including how to show and share their artwork with the public—helping them foster confidence, gratitude and respect. “I have learned how to come into my own during my time at YAC. I was 14 when I joined and I am now 18, and feel like I’ve grown into a whole, healthy, happy person. I have made some of my closest friends at YAC. There were times that I would stumble into YAC—on a day that I really should have stayed home—and they would look after me like family. Another thing about YAC is acceptance. I have gone to YAC after some of my worst days, cried on everyone’s shoulders, and felt loved and cared for. YAC has opened a world of opportunity for young artists; I would never have been able to afford a kiln, clay, all of those paints, lovely canvases and more, yet they had all of those things, and offered them to me with care.” -Sam Boothe 40 Monterey County GIVES! 2023 mcgives.com Youth Music Monterey County 2023–2024 Season Building the next generation through music!
