This year, artists will visit 14 schools, community centers, and senior living facilities, providing educational enrichment through the visiting artist outreach program. For those attending a concert in-person, the Kids Up Front and Free program offers free tickets and transportation for low-income music lovers. “I really enjoyed the chamber music concert on Nov. 12, 2022. I’ve been to several Kids Up Front and Free concerts [at Sunset Center] and the front seats let me clearly see professionals playing and inspire me to work harder on my own cello playing. Thank you for giving us this wonderful chance to see professionals up close.” -Fuyu Meyer Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra Year Founded: 1992 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 3 paid, 10 volunteers Budget: $76,000 333-1283 ensemblemonterey.org Big Idea: Young artists with Youth Music Monterey County’s South County Strings Program and Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL) will get the opportunity to perform in concert with the professionals of the Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra. This Big Idea opportunity provides a new dimension to a student’s understanding of themselves performing as an artist and offers spectacular exposure to professional orchestra musicians. After last year’s performances from the young artists of El Sistema Pajaro, Ensemble Monterey’s audience is eager to hear more. “El Sistema is a visionary movement that uses ensemble music to transform the lives of children: teaching the importance of teamwork, promoting self-confidence, and instilling the value of social responsibility. I thank Ensemble Monterey for giving our beginning orchestra the opportunity to participate in the concert offered in Monterey. Our students were excited to perform and their parents were proud to see them sharing the stage with professional musicians. The Monterey community was welcoming and encouraging and motivated our children to do their best—they exceeded our expectations in behavior and musical performance. Most of our families had never attended a formal concert and they enjoyed the music and their children’s participation. This amazing opportunity showcased what we do, demonstrating that music can bring equality to our society and unify communities towards a common goal.” -Amalia Diaz, music director of El Sistema Pajaro Orchestra First Night Monterey Year Founded: 1990 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 6 paid, 138 volunteers Budget: $250,000 373-4778 Monterey Museum of Art Year Founded: 1959 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 21 paid, 60 volunteers Budget: $2,542,186 372-5477 montereyart.org Big Idea: Expanding access to art is a twoway street, so the Monterey Museum of Art invests in programs that bring fine art to communities and underserved communities into the museum’s diverse exhibitions celebrating California art. The museum staff has tailor-made participatory experiences for diverse groups, including disabled students coming to the museum for their first time, and high school art students who are considering a career path in the field. The museum has brought their expertise to our schools during the school day and for our after-school academies. I am so grateful for their thoughtful partnership bringing a wealth of experience to our students.” -Jaqui Hope, visual and performing arts coordinator, MPUSD spotlight I have consistently seen the Monterey County Pops! create amazing, eye-opening experiences for my students.” Matt Huot, Monterey County Pops!
