18 Monterey County GIVES! 2023 mcgives.com Animals DONate online mcgives.com Hope, Horses, and Kids Year Founded: 2010 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 2.5 paid, 20 volunteers Budget: $394,998 596-6693 hopehorseskids.org Big Idea: It’s not just these gentle giants that make this a Big Idea. Hope, Horses, and Kids use the quiet strength and leadership of horses to help children with special needs develop essential life skills. While youth are the focus, this nonprofit seeks donations to support the equine assistants also critical to the success of this Big Idea. Donors support the horses’ health, nutrition, veterinary checkups, and supplies and equipment required for these animals’ daily needs. “Maddie is a gray mare that came to us anxious and unsure, but so relational. For her rehab, she simply needed assertive guidance and some time to develop trust, and she is now soft, confident and connected. She teams superbly with our clients that have anxiety. For example, Maddie is always happy to spend time with Phoenix, who lives with Tourette syndrome and severe anxiety. As he rides Maddie, Phoenix connects with and reflects her energy and also is so soft and gentle. They are helping each other!” -Lori Tuttle Marine Life Studies Year Founded: 2006 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 2 paid, 177 volunteers Budget: $230,000 901-3833 marinelifestudies.org Big Idea: Donors can help protect the biggest mammals in the ocean with Marine Life Studies’ Big Idea: the Whale Entanglement Team, a rapid response group to rescue whales entangled in lost or abandoned fishing gear. Funds support the maintenance of the R/V Current’Sea (also known as the whale disentanglement ambulance) and help purchase specialized equipment for future entanglement responses to ensure that the WET team is ready for every call. “As a native to the Monterey Peninsula, I’ve spent my entire life in, on, and around the ocean. Our local environment is a beautiful yet fragile place. In working with Marine Life Studies as a documentary filmmaker, I have come to know them as an integral part in the protection of our wondrous bay. Their outreach, education and entanglement programs fulfill an important and necessary role in the conservation of our marine environment.” -Matthew Ferraro, director of photography, JeanMichel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society Max’s Helping Paws Foundation Year Founded: 2016 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 2 paid, 15 volunteers Budget: $437,250 704-6473 maxshelpingpaws.org Big Idea: Sometimes all you need is a helping paw when facing a hard time. Max’s Helping Paws offers a Special Supplemental Program to provide additional financial assistance to low-income pet owners classified as senior, disabled, homeless or veteran who are facing urgent veterinary care and accompanying expenses. Often, these situations result in unnecessary euthanization or suffering for the pet or the owner sacrificing their own basic needs. Donors can contribute to this Big Idea, which adds up to an extra $250 for pet owners, beyond other financial assistance awarded. “My boy is feeling much better with his medication and I owe that to your services. I would not have been able to take care of this without your support. You have my deep gratitude that I am having difficulty putting into words.” -Juan G. Peace of Mind Dog Rescue (POMDR) Year Founded: 2009 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 30 paid, 1,423 volunteers Budget: $1,710,900 718-9122 peaceofminddogrescue.org SNIP Bus Year Founded: 2016 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 0 paid, 9 volunteers Budget: $1,672,000 (925) 895-8531 snipbus.org Big Idea: In its mission to help end pet overpopulation, the SNIP Bus recently celebrated the milestone of 30,000 pets fixed in Monterey County over the past five years. However, the work continues—this nonprofit’s Big Idea reminds us that the local need for low-cost mobile spay and neuter services for the animals belonging to low-income residents is more overwhelming than ever. The skyrocketing cost of living means veterinary care is even more unrealistic for many, making this mobile, affordable service even more valuable. “I cannot tell you how much SNIP Bus means to me: I take stray dogs off the street in East Salinas who are now my family. I cannot afford to get them fixed, but love them so very much. I am very, very grateful for the service SNIP provides so my babies won’t have babies. Without what SNIP does for me (and the community), I do not know what I would do.” -Anonymous, Salinas spotlight The SPCA gives all animals a second chance. They also give people a second chance.” Harrison and Isela Perdue, SPCA Monterey County
