Access to lean protein can be one of the hardest challenges for farmworker families relying on CalFresh or food pantries for their nutritional needs, including some 2,000 people who rely on Nancy’s Project. Donations to Nancy’s Project’s Big Idea go to purchasing rice, beans, eggs, dairy, poultry, meat and fish to help families achieve complete and culturally-aligned nutrition. “Linda A., 60, works as a roadside flower vendor. She was waiting in line for food before Thanksgiving and was worried there wouldn’t be enough. It was a particularly good day, with turkey and milk. Nancy’s Project’s Friday food distribution is something she relies on, like a paycheck. Linda said, ‘I can’t pay for the food but I can help.’ She took on the task of babysitting for others in line. She remembers helping a single mom with six children, ages 3 to 13, get to our school backpack distribution early with all the kids. ‘The kids dropped to the sidewalk and immediately opened the bags, despite Mom’s instructions to wait. They were so excited to share their treasures,’ Linda said.” -Orlando Rivas, board member NATIVIDAD FOUNDATION YEAR FOUNDED: 1988 PAID STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS: 10 paid, 50 volunteers BUDGET: $1,229,312 755-4187 NATIVIDADFOUNDATION.ORG BIG IDEA: Donors to the Natividad Foundation help Natividad, our local hospital and trauma center, fund innovative and specialized care options not found elsewhere in Monterey County. Natividad’s trauma center provides life-saving services to 1,500 critically injured patients yearly and the California Children’s Services-certified Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) gives more than 250 of the tiniest and most fragile babies the best start in life. Advanced medical equipment purchased by the foundation helps maintain this hospital’s Big Ideas and high standard of care. “The foundation has been a saving grace for the community. The resources in the community are limited and with the foundation’s assistance, we are able to provide a ‘breather.’ For many families this can be assistance with life-saving medications, a short motel stay when shelters are not available, or gift cards to cover the cost of the most basic human needs. Often, I hear: ‘We are not going to change someone’s life or living situation with one hospitalization.’ As a social worker, I believe that we make an impact every day we show up to work. I believe that our work, along with your donations, makes an incredible difference for the patients, families and communities who receive support. Here at Natividad, we strive to make a long-lasting impact.” -Sarah, LCSW 128 Monterey County GIVES! 2023 mcgives.com Fund Our Rural Rides Program Donate a Vehicle to Support ITN Receive a year-end tax credit with your in-kind donation.
