Monterey County Gives! 2023

mcgives.com Monterey County GIVES! 2023 115 CALIFORNIA CONDORS IN THE WILD Wild nesting season was exciting this year in Big Sur, as we are now monitoring four fledged chicks! And, we’ll release an additional ten (10) young condors on Nov 28 and Dec 12; all of which were bred in captivity Nov 28 and Dec 12. This means we are climbing closer and closer to our previous benchmark of 100 birds in the wild (we had a huge set back in 2020 due to wildfire and lead poisonings). A magnificent symbol of the wild, the California Condor holds the title of North America’s largest bird. But, it also bears the burden of being one of the most critically endangered species on our continent. Just three decades ago, we faced a heart-wrenching reality—only 22 of these incredible birds remained in captivity, with none soaring freely in the wild. Their existence teetered on the brink of extinction. Today, the California Condor faces yet another peril, as a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus looms near their habitats, and the ongoing threat of lead poisoning continues to plague these magnificent creatures. But there’s hope, and that hope is fueled by the compassion and generosity of individuals like you. With your support, Ventana Wildlife Society is safeguarding the future of the California Condor, ensuring that they continue to grace our skies for generations to come. Our tireless efforts in condor conservation include: • Providing Essential Medical Treatment • Promoting Nonlead Ammunition • Releasing Captive-Bred Condors • Monitoring Nesting Chicks montereycountygives.com/vws www.ventanaws.org Your support for California Condors is making a significant impact, and we are truly thankful!
