MBFT plans to update its current strategic plan, releasing a new plan which expands the Community Seafood Program, enhances business planning with fishermen and seafood businesses and launches a new seafood nutrition campaign. This nonprofit focuses on supporting the local, sustainable fishing industry with programs to increase food security, support working waterfronts, build the next generation of fishery leaders and strengthen community resilience. “The Community Seafood Program has allowed us to share something that is hard to come by in our community. We believe that a sustainable food system is essential to the health of a community, and the Community Seafood Program and Fisheries Trust share our mission. We couldn’t be more happy with the collaboration.” -Helen Handshy, co-founder of The Big Share in Big Sur and a Community Seafood Program food relief partner NEW CAMALDOLI HERMITAGE YEAR FOUNDED: 1958 PAID STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS: 16 paid, 9 volunteers BUDGET: $2,000,000 667-2456 CONTEMPLATION.COM BIG IDEA: Located in a remote area on the coast of Big Sur, the New Camaldoli Hermitage offers recovery, inspiration and peace to souls in need (plus Holy Granola and amazing seasonal fruitcake to more than 2,000 visitors per year). While the Camaldolese monks’ meditation focuses on the big questions, their everyday lives still revolve around Big Ideas. Donations will help transition the Hermitage to solar power, as the monks currently generate their own power using diesel generators (no public utilities reach this retreat). This nonprofit estimates this move will reduce its carbon footprint by more than one-third, helping preserve the silent, pristine surroundings. “When I visited the Hermitage, I was impacted most strongly by the wild beauty/contact with nature. As much as I enjoyed the walks, it was equally nurturing to my soul to look out the window at the sea. To be received in ecumenical spirit is significant and comes across well. My favorite opportunity was visiting the monks in their Vespers prayers.” -Shae Perle, Salinas 110 Monterey County GIVES! 2023 mcgives.com CABS’ mission of Community Wellbeing Resiliency Advocacy Disaster Relief “Our community can design innovative solutions to ensure that tourism benefits businesses, visitors, residents and our fragile coastline.” Butch Kronlund, ED, Community Association of Big Sur “The challenge is not to stop tourism.
