BEST TASTING ROOM Scheid Family Vineyards 7th and San Carlos, Carmel, (831) 626-9463 1972 Hobson Ave., Greenfield, (831) 3860316, scheidvineyards.com East of Eden, the folks at Scheid have established Eden—in the form of an environmentally-friendly, sustainable vineyard and winery, with a tasting room attached. Closer to the coast (just a few blocks from it, in fact) is another version of Eden: Scheid’s Carmel tasting room. What does paradise entail? In Carmel it means fine wines and windows on the people-watching sidewalks. In South County, it takes the form of fine wines in rolling fields. And both settings are filled with fun, knowledgeable staff and people having a great time. BEST WINERY TO VISIT Folktale Winery 8940 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel (831) 293-7500, folktalewinery.com The grapes on Folktale’s 15 acres of Carmel Valley vineyard are living their best lives, no wrath involved—and so can you. A visit to the idyllic Folktale Winery goes beyond just tasting wine and learning about winemaking practices (though there is that on offer). After you sip, enjoy food (including Sunday brunch) in the wine garden, or plan your visit around one of the many live music acts that Folktale hosts. That’s a full day well spent. BEST PLACE FOR KARAOKE Britannia Arms 444 Alvarado St., Monterey (831) 656-9543, britanniaarmsofmonterey.com When it comes to karaoke, it is not about who is the most technically talented singer (that would be a singing competition). It is about who is having the most fun. It’s getting the crowd to join you for a cover of “Sweet Caroline.” By reputation, parties at Pacific Biological Laboratory rivaled Danny and the paisanos for vocal power. But they are no more.
