40 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY NOVEMBER 30-DECEMBER 6, 2023 www.montereycountyweekly.com MUSIC Headbanging to Beethoven may be appealing to some, but perhaps none more than Daniel Henriks and Alexa Dieterle of the choral group I Cantori di Carmel. While classical music is a hallmark of the choir—inspiring the group to perform bucket list pieces from Bach, Mozart and the other great names—the interdisciplinary nature of singing enables Henriks to explore other genres like rock or folk through the lens of a classical singing group. The group, now in its 41st year, has just one common requirement for joining: a passion for music. “We have some people that perform on the level of professional musicians, but it’s really mixed,” says Henriks, music director and conductor. A number of the singers have been performing for decades. Some can play several instruments. But at its core, I Cantori brings people together with a multi-generational inclusive spirit. And there is a common desire to appeal to all-ages audiences through song. The theme for I Cantori’s upcoming schedule is “A Season of Possibilities.” It opens with holiday concerts at Carmel Mission that feature the classical—Mendelssohn is featured in the lineup—as well as the pop ballads of Engelbert Humperdinck. The December concerts are designed to make holiday magic. In a more traditional choral concert, I Cantori’s first show to welcome the season will be at the Carmel Mission. The group then travels to Santa Cruz for a program that includes romantic European fairy-tale pieces, accompanied by a full symphonic orchestra. “Think snow-covered hills and children in anticipation singing,” Henriks says. The group’s leaders are looking forward to the possibilities for eclectic collaborations in the future, hoping to bring in more of the area’s performers. “I would love for all the talent that is here to get together and make awesome music,” Dieterle says. Henriks brings a lengthy conducting resume to his role and Dieterle is a choir soprano. They came to Carmel from Germany in 2020 and were surprised by the wealth of talent and opportunity. “I didn’t know when we moved to the area that there is so much culture going on,” Henriks admits. I Cantori di Carmel performs 8pm Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 2-3 at Carmel Mission Basilica, 3080 Rio Road, Carmel. $40-$55/general admission; $20/military, students, youth. 644-8012, icantori.org.
