www.montereycountyweekly.com NOVEMBER 30-DECEMBER 6, 2023 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 39 MUSIC Ty Segall is a work in progress. The prolific singer-songwriter has never been one to stake himself to a genre. Nor is he likely to hit pause. Three Bells, slated for a January 2024 release, follows last year’s Hello, Hi. And he’s just beginning a global tour. “I like to dive deeper and deeper,” he says of the introspective turn of his recent work. “It’s a journey I have to go on. My only aspiration is to grow.” Since his eponymous 2008 album endeared him to garage-hewn indie rock adherents, Segall has been in a state of constant expansion, drawing from hard rock, glam, soulful acoustic and more, somehow without veering off course through 14 studio albums, a series of singles and EPs and work with other bands, such as Fuzz and Wasted Shirt. “Half the time when I have a specific idea, it doesn’t happen that way,” he points out. “You’re exploring. I would hate to be beholden to one specific type of music.” Yet throughout his career there has been a sense of introspection to Segall’s words. In 2008’s “You’re Not Me,” for instance, he struggles to contend with what he sees in the mirror. While he doesn’t refer to Hello, Hi as a pandemic album, there is a feeling of isolation that creeps into the songs— pondering life behind closed doors in “Saturday Pt. 2.” If newly released singles like “Void” and “My Room” are indications, Three Bells promises to plunge further. In the repetitious “Eggman,” Segall seems to beat his thoughts against a wall, calling out, “Hey! Do you hear what I say?” He plans to introduce a few of the new songs during his performance at Fernwood, an acoustic set backed by longtime collaborator Emmett Kelly. Powering down and playing in an intimate setting is something Segall enjoys—Live at Worship was recorded during an impromptu show at a clothing boutique—although he admits that the enthusiasm is temporary. “It’s good to live in the solo space for a minute, then I get burned on it,” he explains. “You have to supply all the dynamics, the peaks and valleys.” Still, he finds acoustic sets to be valuable in his development as a performer and songwriter. “There’s no hiding,” he says of acoustic shows. “I think of it as a final exam for a song.” Ty Segall 10pm Saturday, Dec. 2. DENÉE SEGALL Going Solo Ty Segall gives his work the acoustic treatment in a performance at Fernwood. By Dave Faries Ty Segall has a new album ready for release and a tour planned with his band. But he plans an intimate show here. “There are no effects,” he says. “I like to do it raw.” REMINDER PROPERTY TAX DUE DATE The deadline for payment of the first installment of 2023-2024 County of Monterey Property Tax is: December 10, 2023 Be sure to mail your tax payments postmarked by the United States Post Office on or before the December 10, 2023 delinquent date, in order to avoid a 10% penalty.
