34 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY November 2-8, 2023 www.montereycountyweekly.com CHILL The root of all evil implies something nefarious about ingredients pulled from the ground. Well, be prepared to make an exception for Elroy’s Golden Milk, the namesake elixir from the bar at Elroy’s. The creamy, light, vegan concoction marries turmeric and ginger, giving the almond milk base a depth of earthiness that lingers at the back of the palate, with turmeric adding a subtle astringency and the ginger a salutary bite. But there’s also another kind of bite that hits right away—white pepper, which pops with flavor much like a fresh peppercorn picked from the vine, and quickly mellows into a mild sweetness. The foam on top is dusted with nutmeg, maple sugar and cinnamon, which add layers of earthy sweetness, but with a light touch—the drink is just slightly sweet. Melissa Sercia, a bar lead at Elroy’s, says it’s one of the most popular drinks on the “restorative” menu, and that enthusiasts are attracted to its immune-boosting properties—she says it’s good for “whenever you feel like you’re coming down with something”—and that it also helps with digestion. All of its ingredients are organic. The spices—aside from those in the dusting—are steamed into the milk and become one with it, and it goes down so smoothly one must be mindful to savor it. It’s like a nectar kissed by the sun, yet firmly rooted in Earth. Elroy’s Fine Foods, 15 Soledad Drive, Monterey. 373-3737, elroysfinefoods.com. Earth Bound Elroy’s Golden Milk is a potion for the season, with a call to slow down and let flavor come to you.
