Friday, Nov. 3 Sharing Heritage Sewam American Indian Dance has performed across the country and internationally, channeling the music and movement of Native Americans through public presentations, residency programs, student assemblies and theatrical productions. The brainchild of Bay Area-based founder and artistic director Eddie Madril, a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona, the group shares dances and songs rarely seen outside native gatherings—with the goal of deepening audiences’ understanding of the cultural history, lifestyle and arts of Native American peoples. Sewam brings that mission to Carmel’s Sunset Center this week as part of the center’s Classroom Connections arts education program, which brings performers into local schools and gives local students the chance to see a special matinee show by those performers. November Skulls is a collaborative art show that takes place from 3-7pm on Sunday, Nov. 5 in Headdress Salon in Monterey. The public is invited to the exhibition of reimagined photography, digital illustrations and elaborate shadow boxes. Jorge started making sugar skullinspired shadow boxes in early 2015 as a way to creatively express her admiration for Día de Los Muertos. She uses vintage cigar boxes, multimedia, and recycled material to create a compilation that expresses the delicate balance between life and death. Sizes, themes and materials vary.
