www.montereycountyweekly.com OCTOBER 19-25, 2023 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 33 CHILL The numbers are pretty staggering. There are something like 53,000 acres in Monterey County devoted to winegrapes, growing everything from the widely popular Pinot Noir to eyebrow-raisers such as Carignan and Valdiguie. So it’s not surprising to find a bottle of Tempranillo from Morgan winery. It’s a venerable grape, the most widely produced variety in Spain, where it brought fame to the Rioja region. Tempranillo is valued for wines of balance and complexity—and the folks at Morgan offer a friendly presentation, easy to sip on its own and just as easy to pair with grilled foods and pumpkin pie. On the nose it greets you with a lush fruit bowl of blackberries, raspberries, haunted by spice and curing tobacco. After all, it’s a wine that evokes autumn and the harvest season. Sipping Morgan’s 2021 vintage brings rich berries pierced by a more bracing bite—a juicy cranberry blend peppered by licorice, dry bark, holiday spice and gourds resting in a field. There is a lot going on in this wine, yet it is all held in abeyance. The overriding impression as you continue to the bottom of the glass is one of a kindly, balanced wine. That a bottle retails for $27 makes it available for everyday occasions. In other words, a rare value, with the emphasis on rare. Of those 53,000 acres, only 23 in the county are reserved for Tempranillo—itself a staggering figure. And Morgan releases just 190 cases. Taste Morgan, 204 Crossroads Blvd., Carmel. 626-3700, morganwinery.com. Temp-ting Morgan’s Tempranillo is a wine suited for fall fun—while it lasts.
