Fall Arts Calendar 2023 Dec. 9 Pink Martini featuring China Forbes Eclectic American band Pink Martini brings a little bit of something for everyone to the stage. Featuring 10-12 musicians, plus lead vocalist China Forbes and occasional guest stars like NPR journalist Ari Shapiro, musical styles range from jazz to Latin to multi-lingual pop and beyond. “At one moment, you feel like you’re in the middle of a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and in the next moment, you’re in a French music hall of the 1930s or in a Palazzo in Napoli,” founder and pianist Thomas Lauderdale told CBS Sunday Morning in 2012. “It’s a bit like an urban musical travelog.” Take this opportunity to travel the world through upbeat numbers and ballads alike—this show is sure to be a good time. [TCL] 7pm Saturday, Dec. 9. Golden State Theatre, 417 Alvarado St., Monterey. $58- $98. 649-1070, goldenstatetheatre.com. Chris Hornbecker Nov. 11 Strings Untied You don’t need a big ensemble to get a big sound. Chamber music is unique in that it does a lot with a little—there’s no sacrificing technical acuity or style or grandiosity, but there is a greater sense of intimacy between audience and musicians, and among the players themselves. The New York-based ensemble the Manhattan Chamber Players was founded in 2015, made up of accomplished soloists who rotate into this group for compositions for various configurations—strings and winds can mix and match accordingly. At this Carmel performance hosted by Chamber Music Monterey Bay, you’ll hear Grace Park and Brendan Speltz on violin, group founder Luke Fleming on viola, cellist Andrea Casarrubios and pianist Adam Golka. The program includes works by Mozart and Shostakovich, and a piano quintet by Casarrubios, wearing her other hat as a composer—this marks the world premiere. [SR] 7:30pm Saturday, Nov. 11. Sunset Center, San Carlos Street at 9th Avenue, Carmel. $25-$75. 625-2212, chambermusicmontereybay.org. Courtesy Manhattan Chamber Players
