He was raised (with his younger siblings, Kathy and Gary) in small town Sussex, New Brunswick by Zillah and Austin Young. After graduating from technical school in St. John, he worked for CN Railways but found the work dull and enrolled at Ryerson University in Toronto, in the Radio & Television Arts department where he met his future wife Yvonne Wetherall. While attending Ryerson, Rob took a parttime job at Spence-Thomas Productions, a small sound studio where he learned the art of sound from an expert–Patrick Spence-Thomas–to whom Rob would later credit his success. Following his studio experience, he travelled extensively for CTV W5, an investigative news show until he and Yvonne decided to leave their good jobs and move to Vancouver. For the best part of forty years, Rob recorded sound in the feature film industry. His positive attitude, professionalism, and thorough knowledge of his craft earned him an impressive reputation, a formidable resume, and many friends. He was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Cinema Audio Society. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Sound for the film Unforgiven (1993). He was also nominated by the British Academy for Unforgiven (1993) and William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1996), by the Cinema Audio Society for Jumanji (1996) and the Geni Awards for The Grey Fox (1983). Much to Rob’s amusement, he was the subject of an award-winning one-act play, called “The Sound Man” that debuted in New York. After retiring to a small village in the south of France, Rob happily spent his time reading voraciously, listening to music, writing a novel and screen play, cooking, hiking, fishing and travelling to exotic places. He was never bored. Tragically, he died in Albi France on June 11, 2023 at the age of 76 from complications following a fall in Morocco while on a food tour. He will be forever missed by his extended family but most poignantly by his sister, his “beautiful old wife”, his children Brendan (Jane), Michael (Mackenzie) and Gillian (Derek) and his grandsons Isaac, Sebastian and Wilder who will learn about Rob’s wicked sense of humour from their parents. He leaves behind so much kindness. Rob Young Love Fest will be held on Sunday, July 23rd at 3:30 pm at the Polygon Gallery, 101 Carrie Cates Ct, North Vancouver, BC. His family and film friends invite all who knew and loved Rob to attend.
